Heavily Into Jesus / Stewed Mulligan - 3.3 MB
Stewed Mulligan are a "Fire on the Mountain" Virtuoso ensemble out of West Virginia. Here is their version of Wilderness Road's "Heavily Into Jesus." See their website at http://www.stewedmulligan.com and give a listen to their latest cd "Repeat Offenders." A great band, in the tradition of the Road, Commander Cody, Plywood Cattle Co. and the Holy Modal Rounders.
Hello Stranger / The Carter Family - 2.7 MB
The Carter Family influenced everybody, and the Road was no exception. The Carter's guitar style was what most old timey aspirants mastered first. Their cd's are still available, and any good search engine will fetch you a look at them. They were signed to a recording contract in 1927 in Bristol, Tenn. The other singer, writer signed that day was Jimmy Rogers, the singing brakeman. Both the Carters and Rogers were recorded by Ralph Peer, who later founded Peer International, the music publishing house.
Devilish Mary / Tom Paley - 2.1 MB
Tom Paley is one of those legendary picker/singers who was at the center of the early 60's revival of interest in American traditional music. A revival which helped inspire what followed: bands like Wilderness Road, The Byrds, Commander Cody, Kinky Friedman, and The Band. Paley continues to record, make music and tour from his home in England, where he heads up the New Deal String Band. The mpeg posted here is but a taste of Tom's extraordinary banjo and guitar picking. For more on Tom Paley, click here
